| Bam's Bish | Yahoo! Java Mail Does anyone use Yahoo!Mail? I do, it's recently moved the java based (maybe it's not java, it's just fancy so I assume it's java based) out of Beta and have made it their default user interface. Any thoughts? I'm still getting use to the locations of some buttons, I don't like preview panes, they annoy me, but the problam is that you can't hide the ads with the pane hidden, but they just pop back anyways, so there's no point hiding them anyways. Over all I like it a bit more. |

Java Mail I only use it when I say I have an email ... which 10 times out of 10 its Spam, but I've been using it since it was in its beta stages, so I really have no problems with it. The change is just AT&T taking over more of Yahoo to be honest, or well thats what I think everytime I have to deal with AT&T regarding old SBC DSL lines. |

| Bam's Bish | Re: Yahoo! Java Mail I only use Gmail to create online poker accounts. I don't like Google, it's becoming too much like Microsoft, just throwing money at creating a better version of any good idea out there, and if they can't compete, they just buy it. I'm just sick of hearing about them. I use Ask.com as well. It's all about the algorithm |

| One Very Hot Apple | Re: Yahoo! Java Mail Funny you should mention that... I felt the same way about Yahoo! which was the reason I switched my search engine, and eventually email, to google, before it became so popular. After all, Yahoo! had bought out several other businesses to help boost its popularity, including geocities, altavista and flikr and joined forces with Verizon, AT&T and Microsoft to promote and expand their instant messaging capabilities, which was integrated in the new Email merger with AT&T. Yahoo is entirely built on the purchases of smaller companies and what most people don't know is that Yahoo used Google's search engine to power their search results for the first 10 years. It was only in 2004 that Yahoo & Google parted ways. One of the main reasons for Google's popularity is that it holds advertising partnerships with a lot of companies who in turn promote and invest in google. Google was orginally created for business use targeting advertising. In fact Google was privately owned until 2004 and still retains primarily individual investors rather than large corporations or mutual funds, which allows for more flexibility in their business approach. Like google.org for example. It's a non-profit research project dedicated to finding a resolution for global warming, global poverty and public health. They are currently working on an electric hybrid car that gets 100mpg. They are also currently switching to all solar-powered energy for their building. It's true that Google bought YouTube and JotSpot... but the difference with Google when they acquire a company is it results in many services and features that were once premium, to now be free to the user. They maintain their anti-corporate, no evil philosophy. Another cool thing about Google, the founders and CEO refuse to be given a salary/bonuses from the company to allow for more pay to their employees. They also encourage their employees to spend 20% of their work day on projects that interest them personally. I've been using Google since the mid-nineties and was able to visit their building, Googleplex, and test gmail before it was released as a beta because my friend worked there, so I guess I sort of have a soft spot for them. lol

| Mondu's Boy Toy | Re: Yahoo! Java Mail Also to add to what Kat said. Yahoo! has been around since at least '94 ... Thats when I first started using a computer, so it may have been around since before then, but I'm not sure. Anyways back to my point. Yahoo merged with SBC, who was bought by AT&T last year ... I am honestly surprised at AT&T hasn't branded their name on Yahoo! yet. The only thing I've seen is when dealing with AT&T's DSL support to verify username/passwords they send me to att.yahoo.com ... which has a Yahoo | AT&T logo. Also seeing how I am in the Networking field and was looking for a job not to long ago and both companies are based out of California. I know how each company pays their employee's too. I presently work for a privately owned ISP and AT&T's pay is almost the exact same as the company I work for now, while Google pays its employees way better then AT&T. I just couldn't accept an offer because I refuse to drive through LA to get to work. |
