PC crashing like a mofo

I have a real issue with my PC crashing.. real bad, it used to play up bad with only word and excel files, even though I have a kosher copy of office, now it seems that even certain actions on websites will cause the same kind of crash (even on non porn sites.. imagine that) I have this free version of nortons anti virus on my machine, which I am going to kill and see if that makes any difference, but I would of thought even nortons with its evilness would not cause a computer to crash.. non the less, the mac keeps on chugging along.. I hate to really say this.. but more and more.. I am becoming convinced that macs are far better than PC's.

ha! its cause macs are better! which, i only now say because i too have recently owned a mac for the first time and have never encountered any of the same problems as i did with a PC...

and Norton can definately cause crashing. its a huge complex program that windows doesnt always like.

Macs are ok. If you're into SATAN.

Norton is by far one of the worst software companies on the planet, they spend more money force marketing their product (especially through their butt monkey Best Buy) than they do trying to develop a system that will actually work with Windows without hampering it signifigantly. Especially the free version. That version alone will make people go out and buy a new computer, thinking the old one has died.

That said, once you're rid of that monstrocity, head over to download.com, download CCleaner, and do a registry repair and clean up the programs and files you don't need. You ought to see a signifigant improvement in that.

Re: PC crashing like a mofo

Seems like McAfee is hit and miss every other generation of their software. One generation is perfect, so perfect I hardly realize it's even installed. The next it seems like I'd rather put a hammer through the HD to prevent viruses.

On Friday, I updated my parents computer to McAfee's current engine and I think it completely fubared their computer. I haven't solved the problem yet, might not be McAfee, might be a bad HD.

McAfee has a suite which includes firewall and anti-spyware programs included for about $40 - $50, depending. Personally, I wouldn't trust any of the free programs. most of the people I've seen use them wind up with PC problems. the only time I've ever had problems with McAfee was when the year was up and I needed to renew it. good lord, I can't make the bad man stop. but you get that with norton too, so I guess it's a small price to pay to be secure.

I use AVG Free Addition ... it scans daily when you want it too and also looks for daily updates if needed - you just have to set the times for it!

It got rid of alot of shit that McAfee DIDN'T find!

Re: PC crashing like a mofo

I ditched nortons, updated the drivers, I will have a go a the registry.. although I would be shocked if that would be an issue. as this is after a complete wipe and re install, the hard drive that xp is on, worked fine in my old pc, and the new pc has always had this issue to a lesser or greater degree, my gut feeling now lies in that it might be the graphics card, I will try it with another graphics card once I get my grubby mits on it

other graphics card installed.. everything seems ok so far... just need to put it through some scrolling on excel which always seemed to bugger it up before.
