Dark Ascendance: Shattered Dreams

I just finished chapter six last night. At over 40,000 words, I'm looking at being 40% finished with the first rough draft.

I'm starting to get excited here. This thing is really starting to come together.

For those out of the loop, Dark Ascendance is an epic science fiction adventure story I'm working on, initially it will be a trilogy but I've got plans for a second. The background setting I've been working on for about seven years. I set down and plotted out the first book last October, and began writing the first draft on December 25th. I've broken 60 pages at the density I like to view it, but publishing wise I believe this will equal about 180 pages roughly that I've completed. My goal is 100,000 words, roughly speaking 400-500 pages. I have something like 40,650 words so far.

Basically, the stories follows three "brothers" (guys who are unrelated but bonded by personal circumstance) who go on a camping trip in northern Washington and are killed, and ressurected thousands of years in the future. Mankind has experienced an exodus, leaving Earth as four seperate tribes after a nuclear holocaust. There are varying degrees of colonies and governments established in space, from the lawless nations of the Liberian Federation, the Utopian Terran Union, the technologically advanced Sable and BioCorp Alliance, to the "democratic," genetically engineered empire of New America.

The brothers will learn that they are part of a cosmic struggle for supremecy and divine understanding, set forth by an ancient species that colonized and influenced the evolution of life on Earth millions of years before human civilization began. As political forces move on each other, the brothers find themselves at odds as to who will fulfill an ancient prophecy that will either end in a new age of enlightenment, or the complete destruction of the Universe.

Why am I writing it? One reason, I used to enjoy writing Star Trek fan fiction, and I could be writing all sorts of fan fiction, but why bother when you feel like your talented enough to create something original and actually make a little money off of it. Another is that instructors at both colleges I've attended have commented that my writing is excellent, and think I'm more than capable of writing a book. Another reason is that I'm a huge science fiction fan, and yet I've never found anything out there that really spoke for me. I liken it to what some musicians have said about their music. It's never really good until you hear it the way it sounds like it should sound in your head.

I've also passed not just the idea, but snippits of the story bible and a couple segments of the rough draft itself and recieved nothing but positive reviews. (well, not exactly true.. One person thought I was a bit dry, and my wife, who doesn't care for scifi at all really didn't get it).

And it just plain excites me that I've been able to stick to the development of something for so long. I feel like a lot of people are going to enjoy it. Though sometimes I worry that it will get a backlash like the Divinci Code. I'm trying to stay away from the "Second Coming of Jesus" idea, but the problem is that I really do want to add christian elements and mythology to it, and since I am following some of the tennants of the Hero's Journey, that is bound to happen. The Christ story fits into that line of thinking all too well.

I think the most I can hope for is that it will make people think. There is a moral, not just one but many that I'm incorporating into it. Which is exciting unto itself, when you write something like this your given a timeless opportunity to present your opinion and how you feel, but at the same time offset it with ideas that maybe you don't feel, but are no less valid.

Anyway... I'm gonna stop babbling and get back to writing...

As of last night, I've completed chapter seven. As per the word count, I am now 46.5% complete with the first rough draft.

This was a pretty cool chapter to write. It actually reveals quite a bit, from who most of the players are and what they want, what the Ascendance is really about, and the details behind a particularly tragic event in two of the characters lives that molded them into the people that they are today.

The next chapter will be cool too because I get to turn all that on its head... Reveal a truth about what REALLY happened that night, and fundimentally change the relationship between those characters. I think this will also complete the first challange, and kick the story off on its epic adventure for good.

The chapter after that will be a lot of fun to write as well, because it will give me the chance to do something I haven't done in a really, really long time... Orchestrate an epic space battle.
