World Changers

What songs do you think had a serious impact or changed the world of music? Was it a positive change or a negative one? Why?

OH...

I was reading up on this just recently and Britains most highly regarded music magazine Q stated that Elvis Presley's "That's all Right' was the single most influential song in the worlds history.

I think I agree. Not only was Presley the forefront of all that is rock and roll, gospel. country, etc. he has paved the way for innovators in their individual genres.

I found this quote in the article written that I liked...Bob Dylan said, "When I first heard Elvis's voice I just knew that nobody was going to be my boss. It was like busting out of jail."

I am gonna have to go with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles. It was their first #1 in America and the response was unheard of. It was the first time a group had pulled that type of response from the public. It paved the way for all sorts of screaming, crying fans to come in the future. I think it was a positive impact because it made it alright for people to really get into the bands they love. And it put music even further into the limelight of pop culture.

I disagree about Elvis being the Alpha and Omega of rock... Much of his sound was ripped off from black artists who were never as well known as he was. I have nothing personal against ol' Swivel Hips, I just think it's a shame that only his version of Hound Dog ever gets any radio play, though it was originally recorded in a bluesier style by Big Mama Thornton in 1953. I believe that Love Me Tender was the only song Elvis actually penned, and all he did was put some simple lyrics to the old tune "Aura Lee."

I admit that music changed because of Elvis. But it didn't start there, and I wish that the artists who actually started the Rock and Roll movement got more credit.

*end rant*

That said, I personally think that Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" was a huge part of the movement music made from disco to pop in the early 80s. And I still really dig the guitar solo.

I agree with you about Elvis to a degree...

what Elvis did was bring all of those genres to the forefront.

Before Elvis, none of that music was even being recognized...it took his face, his hips, and his voice to actually bring about any change in the growth and innovation of music.

He was most definetly not the first, but i do think he was a great factor in the acceptance of "different" styles of music by the general public and a general change in the music industry itself.

It began to look for diversity and creativity rather than the same general music mold they had been following.

The Wheels On The Bus...

Cuz it kept the really annoying kids on the bus busy during field trips.

On a serious note though...

I have no clue... I'm barely able to type right now and I have to get ready to start my day here soon.

I agree with Elvis changing rock n' roll as we know it.

The Velvet Underground definitely opened the doors for the world of punk rock.

Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" signalled the end of the hair band metal era.

Run DMC w/ Aerosmith started the combination of rap and rock.

you should try to post the first paragraph then edit the response and throw the rest in it might work.

I must also say that "Rapers Delight" paved the way for popular hip hop. It was not the first rap record by any means but it was the first one to catch on and become largely popular. And my god it was like 15 minutes long

I will go with "The Wall" Pink Floyd, made such a huge impact as an epic album that worked like a story, although they did make the pre runner to this similar "Animals" as an album I prefere "Animals" but "The Wall" is the one most recognised by people of all music interests

The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Wipers, D.O.A., The Dicks, Husker Du, Mission of Burma, Minor Threat...

these bands are who invented punk music, along with others. they are the core sound that all real punk artists aspire from. they changed the world with their music, positively and negatively. "who the hell are these guys? what are they doing to the music industry!? this is loud metal crap!" they would say.

it was people making important and rebellious statements through music, it was and still is an underground movement.

and if i hear people continuing to give people like avril lavigne, strung out, no use for a name and sum 41 the label "punk" im gonna start throwing knuckles.

it's funny how people will throw those artists into the "punk" genre. if people wanna see punk, they should go to a warped tour concert once and listen to some of the bands, not necessarily the headliners. of course some of the bands that I've seen there, I wouldn't consider punk, but you'd get the general jist.

well its a hard question to answer....more appropriate is this one....name an artist who HASN'T changed the world of music

I mean lets see, way back in the caveman days people used to bang 2 rocks together for music lol someone back then must have said.....lets see what these 2 bones sound like together....that was a change.

during the days of classical music (way back in the old old days) every composer that came forward with a new style made a major change to the world of music, bethoven, handel (so shoot me if i spell like a lame duck hopped up on viagra ), then along came jazz and blues artists, another period of change, rock and roll. Everyone who comes into the music world, no matter how awful has made a massive change to the face of music as we know it.....to add to the list, the beatles, the doors, chuck berry, the rolling stones, (the whole of the british invasion) EVERYONE, and who knows, maybe that kid running around breathing through a harmonica in your living room will make the next huge change to music????

i agree, but i have my own little opinion about warped tour it used to kick ass much more, but slowly over the years it has started leaning towards the Emo genre, which is a little disapointing.... and people think its a prep/rave-fest which drives me crazy to be sharing the crowd with a brittney spears fan who happens to only be at warped tour for the hot guys to party with and listen to bands she's never heard of.... but there are still the "genuine" crowd who are there to support the underground world of true punk...

personally I think the whole idea of "labeling" artists into catagoies like that is stupid. Music is music. Either it reaches out to you or it doesn't. Who really cares what the "label" is? Appreciate the artist and the music for waht it is and stop trying to name it. It's just as bad as labeling people. Maybe even worse because the musical culture seems to influence the labeling of people in society as well. But anyway that is a different thread all together.

i guess im out of the norm, but i happen to like a label for myself, what i do and what i listen to, sets me apart from everyone else and makes me feel "placed". i label myself all the time and really so do most people. even when you say, "im not a bitch" youre recognizing a "label" in the first place, everyone uses/has labels, its really no big deal. its what you believe that matters.
